Summary:

The Director, Talent Acquisition plays a critical role recruiting, selecting and hiring qualified talent for the ASPCA, the nation’s first and leading animal welfare organization, where for more than 150 years, we’ve been on the frontlines to save, transform and protect millions of lives in the fight against animal cruelty.

The Director, Talent Acquisition is responsible for partnering with hiring managers to build strong and diverse talent pipelines and support the full hiring process for open positions across the ASPCA. This position will not only provide direct recruitment support to open positions in their portfolio but will also oversee key projects to help elevate and expand our recruitment efforts..

  • The Director, Talent Acquisition reports directly to the Senior Director, Talent Acquisition and has no direct reports.

Where and When You’ll Work

  • This remote-based position (which requires travel, as described below) is open to all eligible candidates based within the United States. Candidates based in Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 15% annually, as needed.

Compensation

The applicable target hiring range for this remote role is based on where the employee works, which for remote roles is the employee’s primary location of residence, and its respective cost of labor. We have organized the U.S. varying costs of labor index into three geographic zones. As a point of reference, below, we have included our ASPCA locations by geographic zone to illustrate what the hiring range would be in each of the following areas. 

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary ranges for this role are set forth below and may be modified in the future.

  • Zone 1 (For example: Asheville, NC; Champaign, IL; Columbus, OH; Gainesville, FL; Miami, FL; Oklahoma City, OK; Overland, KS; Union, MO; Weaverville, NC): $96,000-102,000 annually
  • Zone 2 (For example: Los Angeles, CA): $106,000-112,000 annually
  • Zone 3 (For example: Washington D.C.; New York, NY): $116,000-123,000 annually

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities are listed in general order of importance, and include but are not limited to:

Hiring Leadership & Client Support

  • Lead the full-cycle recruitment process for an assigned portfolio of teams across the ASPCA: support the creation of accurate and compelling job descriptions and scorecards, design effective and inclusive interview processes, craft assignments and questions to collect the right evidence, and help make thoughtful hiring decisions
  • Coach hiring managers and help design and facilitate trainings on all aspects of hiring, including but not limited to effective interview techniques, model effective interviewing, and guide them through evidence-based decision-making
  • Oversee recruitment efforts for positions within your portfolio and proactively build a pipeline of exceptional and diverse talent for roles on staff, including identifying, meeting with, and cultivating top talent for future roles and collaborate across departments to engage staff in the hiring process
  • Stay abreast of best practices and develop and share new hiring resources as needed to equip hiring managers to more effectively navigate the hiring process and hire top talent

Hiring Strategy & Project Management

  • Oversee key talent acquisition focus areas as assigned, serving as the primary project manager to develop the vision and goals, engage with key stakeholders, identify and implement strategies, track and evaluate data and adjust approach as necessary to meet ongoing objectives
  • Collaborate with the Director, Candidate & Community Engagement to share critical roles on social media, with our online talent community, and with other key stakeholders
  • Build relationships with key internal/external partners to assure that our outreach is inclusive and our talent pipelines are robust and diverse
  • Establish an evidence-based approach to analyzing activity and trends through appropriate data collection and metrics along with anecdotal summaries of sourcing and hiring trends

Operations & Administrative Support

  • Utilize our applicant tracking system (Workday) and maintain other tracking and reporting systems to ensure our hiring process is efficient and effective, and that hiring data is accurate
  • Manage an efficient hiring process, ensuring that hiring manager’s needs are met and that candidates move expeditiously through the process, minimizing time spent in process and ensuring frequent communication throughout the hire process
  • Collaborate with internal partners to complete key operations tasks throughout the hiring process, including interview scheduling, onboarding, job description maintenance and more

  • Ability to deliver results in a high-volume hiring environment with various hard-to-fill positions, with a track record of sourcing, selecting and driving top talent to join an organization
  • Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders nationwide, in both remote and on-site settings, and to influence and motivate people to desired outcomes based on data and hiring best practices
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and meets deadlines, with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to develop and facilitate adult training and learning opportunities, ensuring participants are engaged and comprehend material presented
  • Ability to think strategically and utilize data to drive measurable results; comfort utilizing various data tracking tools
  • Ability to strategically drive work and oversee key projects aligned to evolving business needs, with proficiency with project management tools and best practices
  • Ability to effectively respond to challenges and make adjustments based on feedback
  • Must possess a high degree of confidentiality and the ability to work with sensitive information and operate with discretion where appropriate

Education and Work Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent professional experience required
  • 7 or more years of professional experience; minimum of 4 years in a talent acquisition or similar hiring-focused role required
  • Experience directly supporting Hiring Managers through full-cycle recruitment required
  • Experience hiring for animal welfare and/or non-profit roles preferred; experience hiring for veterinarians and/or licensed veterinary technicians strongly preferred
  • Experience developing and implementing direct outreach and recruitment strategies required (e.g. resume mining, email marketing, social media recruitment, job fairs, recruitment events, etc.)
  • Experience project managing complex projects strongly preferred
  • Experience utilizing an Applicant Tracking System required; prior experience utilizing Workday a plus
