Position Overview:

The Head Coach for Men's & Women's Cross Country and Assistant Coach for Track & Field is responsible for planning and instructing/teaching/coaching their student-athletes, as well as the recruitment of all team members, and the performance of student-athletes during all athletic and academic activities. Additionally, this role includes managing the budget and financial responsibility for the Cross Country program.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Communication Management: Respond promptly to daily communications via email and voicemail, addressing inquiries promptly and professionally.
  2. Policy Adherence and Ethical Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to the University's mission, policies, procedures, ethical standards, Catalog, Staff Handbook, and compliance with data protection regulations and pertinent legal regulations in all aspects of admission activities; as well as the University Athletic Department’s vision, mission, values, and aims and objectives.
  3. University Engagement: Participate in university events, committees, self-studies, new student orientation, and commencement exercises and ceremonies as needed.
  4. Special Projects & Assigned Duties: Execute special projects assigned by the President, Director of Athletics, or another supervisor. Perform any other assigned duties as required.
  5. Compliance Adherence: Ensure strict compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, as well as FNU Policies, Procedures, Rules and Regulations, the FNU Code of Ethics, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Florida Information Protection Act of 2014 (FIPA), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”), and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Throughout the school year you will prioritize Cross Country. You will assist the Director of Athletics with all aspects of running the Florida National University intercollegiate varsity Men's & Women's Cross Country teams and the Athletic Department. During the spring semester you will assist the Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Head Coach and/or the Director of Athletics with all aspects of running the Florida National University intercollegiate varsity Men’s & Women’s Track & Field teams.
  2. The Head Coach is responsible for administering all facets of the Cross Country program’s year-round activities, most specifically the instructing, teaching, and coaching of student-athletes. Other duties include, but are not limited to practice organization, competition day preparation, recruiting and evaluation of prospective student-athletes, maintaining gear and equipment inventory, and supervising student-athletes academically and in all athletic activities.
  3. The Head Coach is responsible for evaluating and determining priorities relating to sport budget preparation, equipment purchases, and scheduling. The Head Coach must demonstrate the ability to manage a designated budget through qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  4. The Head Coach must demonstrate concern for student-athlete academic pursuits by adherence to department and University academic policies, as well as initiation of personal academic goals for each student-athlete; academics and student retention is of the upmost importance at FNU.
  5. The Head Coach will select, train, evaluate, supervise, and mentor Assistant Coaches, all Graduate Assistants, Team Managers, volunteers, interns, etc. This requires the ability to delegate responsibility and manage those individuals in completing assigned tasks.
  6. The Head Coach must adhere to all policies and procedures of the NAIA, the USCAA, applicable Conferences, City of Hialeah, local municipalities, etc.
  7. Along with the Faculty Athletic Representative and Director of Athletics, ensure that all student-athletes are eligible in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NAIA and USCAA prior to their representation of the institution in any manner.
  8. Act as an Admissions Representative and help your team’s student-athletes enroll in the University. This includes admissions paperwork, uploading documents, and ensuring student-athletes successfully complete their Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Bursar’s Office, Student Services, Registration Office, and any other requirements.
  9. Prior to the beginning of each term/semester, verify that all academic, financial, community service, and athletic eligibility requirements of your team’s student-athletes have been met.
  10. Enforce the dress code (e.g. team clothing) when traveling with teams.
  11. Act as a liaison to various areas within the Athletic Department.
  12. Responsible for completing the necessary requirements of CPR.

Education, Experience, and General Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in Higher Education athletics is highly desirable.
  • Collegiate level coaching experience which includes demonstrated proficiency in recruiting, training, and compliance.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. May require overnight stays.
  • Must be able to attend all athletic activities, contests, and travel with the team as required.
  • Ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem solving and decision-making.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct both in person and on social media.
  • Ability to effectively counsel student-athletes on requirements for personal conduct, academic performance, and athletic participation.
  • Ability to direct the maintenance of accurate records and reports, particularly athletic budget, eligibility, compliance, and academic items.
  • Candidate must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, and questions with students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively teach fundamentals and strategies during practice sessions and to successfully coach during competitions.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills required.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment and work compatibly and cooperatively with the coaching staff and all University personnel.
  • Project a positive image of Florida National University within the community of South Florida.
  • Assist with fundraising, marketing, and promotional activities when needed.
  • Develop and establish community involvement and participate in public relations activities.
