Location Supervises various locations within the city of Carson/Gardena

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Healthy Lifestyle Manager will assist in the planning and implementation of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC) Playworks program. The Healthy Lifestyles manager will train and oversee Recess Coaches, maintain strong relationships with school partners, and support the Director of Healthy Lifestyles to develop new trainings for program staff, and facilitate the implementation of any new or modified programming. This position is based in Carson working with Gardena and Carson schools, currently a part-time position 25-27 hours a week, with a possibility to transition to full-time, if need and resources are available.

In your role you provide on-site supervision of Boys & Girls Clubs staff, conduct daily observation, and provide consultation and professional development to staff that foster social emotional wellness and increase physical activity through play-based learning. You will work directly manager Recess Coaches and work with designated school administration, and teachers to provide expertise on program best practices and or as well as model and teach the strategies, games, and systems to develop and sustain a positive classroom and recess culture. In partnership with the school, Recess Coaches create opportunities where students and school staff are active, learn leadership skills and conflict resolutions tools, and practice respectful and inclusive behavior.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Program Development and Implementation

· Manage, coach and support staff at various school sites.

· Support the Director of Healthy Lifestyles with curriculum development.

· Develop, organize and facilitate BGCC and School staff training

· In partnership with Director of Healthy Lifestyle, responsible for renewal of school partnership.

· Create system for collecting ongoing site program updates from YDP- Recess.

· Model BGCC core values, program implementation, group management, and rapport building strategies for school staff.

· Check in weekly with Director of Healthy Lifestyles for updates, questions and concerns.

· Directly under the supervision of Director of Healthy Lifestyles

· Address concerns, questions, issues of parents and or teachers.

· Advise Director of Healthy Lifestyles of any program needs, concerns, and problems.

· Assure that programs operate at optimum capacity and meet student's needs.

· Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs.

· Prepare periodic reports and attend regular meeting

· Manage the recruitment and hiring process for new YDP-Recess Coaches.

· Assist Director with administrative task related to program management

· Support with Healthy Lifestyles department day-to-day onsite components of programming when necessary.

· Coordination with administration, educators and BGCC staff for scheduling programmatic delivery in person or virtually. Including the collecting and maintaining of paperwork, organizing and keeping current on daily, weekly, monthly schedules, meeting agendas, notes and data.

· Maintain communication between BGCC staff, school staff, teachers, and volunteers.

· Support the with planning and implement the learning units and recess staff trainings for program components.

· Deliver onsite consultation, and oversee the implementation of the following components.

o Recess – BGCC staff to develop a safe and inclusive recess experience.

o Student leadership program – Program manager oversees planning and implementation of the Junior Coach" student leadership program during school hours and after school hours

o Class Game Time – PM supports and oversee the delivery of classes in person and with elementary grade levels students and their teacher in skills building, cooperative games, and activities to increase awareness of rules, boundaries, skills utilized and cultural expectations at recess.

Supervision

  • Communicate regularly with school leadership regarding program implementation, program quality, scheduling and training, site visit and other relevant information.
  • Conduct regular program observations & data reviews to ensure high-quality programming.
  • Conduct daily site visits, send recap observation note to YDP-Recess Coaches, and Healthy Lifestyles Director
  • Perform evaluation of YDP-Recess Coach and oversee curriculum implementation during the school year to ensure fulfillment of expectations and responsibilities.
  • Mange the recruitment and hiring process of new YDP-Recess Coach.
  • Maintain a clean environment
  • Help develop injury prevention methods, evaluates injuries.
  • Ensure a productive work environment by participating in regular unit and organization staff meetings.
  • Supervise staff at multiple sites

Relationships:

  • Maintains close, daily contact with staff to interpret and explain organization mission, program objectives, discuss issues, and provides/receives information.
  • Maintains contact with schools, members’ parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May participate in special programs and/or events.
  • May be required to help in other program areas.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with BGCC staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.

External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

Requirements:

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related field.
  • Knowledge of youth development.
  • Good level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific classes.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive data and information.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
  • Ability to deal with the general public.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications and TB clearance.
  • Must be fully vaccinated.
  • Must have a valid State Driver’s License.

ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, and temperature and noise extremes.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing for long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
