Description

This position entails providing cancer or reproductive genetic counseling to cancer or prenatal and pre-conception patients. This counseling addresses the risk to bear children with genetic disorders, birth defects, and mental retardation. Common indication for patient referral are: advanced maternal age, risk for single-gene disorders or multifactorial conditions, increased risk for chromosome abnormalities or open fetal defects on maternal serum maker screening, fetal anomalies detected on ultrasound, and teratogenic exposures in pregnancy.

Patients are informed about the nature of etiology of the condition(s) in question. Where appropriate counseling is furnished regarding options for prenatal diagnosis, often via amniocentesis and/or chorionic villus sampling. These procedures are described, including benefits, risks, and limitations. Informed consent is obtained for those patients opting for one of the invasive procedures. For those not wishing to pursue invasive testing, other reproductive options are discussed, including: screening tests, IVF with pre-implementation genetic diagnosis, use of donor gametes, and adoption.

Responsibilities

1. Provide direct counseling services and education to patients who have cancer or are pregnant/planning to become pregnant regarding the following issues: teratogen exposures, abnormal ultrasound findings, abnormal blood test results, positive carrier status, advanced maternal/paternal age, personal pregnancy, and or/or family history of a complex trait, single gene disorder, or chromosome abnormality, multi-fetal pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, non-invasive and invasive prenatal testing options, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, sperm and ovum donation, etc.

2. Clinic Coordinator for weekly general genetics clinic. Responsibility include the appropriate scheduling of clinic patients, confirmation of appointments, gathering necessary medical records, researching laboratories for targeted genetic testing, shipping and tracking patient specimens, contacting physicians and patients with test results, patient advocacy, facilitating communication between patients/families and the geneticist/fellows, and arranging follow-up consultations as indicated.

3. Primary Clinical Supervisor for masters level genetic counseling students during their clinical rotations.

4. Write chart notes, patient summary letters and/or physician consultation letters.

5. Determine whether or not an appropriate referral has been made and ensure that patients are seen as quickly as possible by an appropriate genetic counselor/physician as indicated.

6. Coordinate specimen retrieval, shipping, tracking and billing of prenatal specimens shipped too our institution for diagnostic testing (i.e. prenatal testing for Tay Sachs disease, cystic fibrosis, Gaucher disease, etc.). Report and interpret test results for physicians and their patients. .

7. Field numerous daily telephone calls from physicians who are seeking guidance about the appropriate management of their patients. Issues that are commonly addressed: interpretation of carrier test results, issues of concern that were identified in pregnancy, medical and/or family histories, the availability of carrier and/or diagnostic testing options, whether or not genetic counseling/testing is medically indicated, and basic information about rare and common genetic/chromose disorders.

8. Facilitate communication between our diagnostic laboratories (cytogenetic, molecular, and biochemical) and referring doctors. Duties include providing patients and physicians with normal, inclusive and/or abnormal test results, recommending and arranging for appropriate follow-up testing and/or counseling, clarifying specimen requirements, and relaying billing information. This applies to patients who have been seen by our clinical staff and patients who have yet to be referred tour institution.

9. Screen and interview candidates who have applied for the masters level program in Human Genetics.

10. Perform other related duties

Qualifications

  • 2 years of genetic counseling experience
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification within 3 years of graduation from Genetic Counseling Program.

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $85000 - $131538 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
