Summary of Position

The Curator of the Aktá Lakota Museum is responsible for administering the preservation, care, and research
of the museum’s cultural, historical, and contemporary collections. This position also includes the planning
and execution of cultural-related programs and events. This is an exempt position.

Reports to the Museum Director

Core Responsibilities

The primary role of the Aktá Lakota Museum staff is to uphold the St. Joseph’s Indian School learning model by
fostering an appreciation for the history of the Lakota people and the vibrant arts and culture of the Lakota
communities.

Responsibilities

1. Supervise curatorial staff.
2. Coordinate and implement exhibit rotation; determine contents of the exhibit, select artifacts and/or
art, and write exhibit labels.
3. Classify and assign registration numbers to objects, and supervise inventory control.
4. Direct and supervise the handling, display, loan, care, and storage of all collection objects.
5. Identify, recommend and manage the restoration of objects that require preservation work.
6. Identify and recommend preservation procedures. (Storage methods; control of temperature,
humidity, and light).
7. Conduct research on new and existing artifacts that have incomplete information.
8. Provide tours; develop and present public outreach programs.
9. Build partnerships that enhance community engagement.
10. Performs other duties as necessary to accomplish Museum goals.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications: graduate degree/undergraduate with a focus in in Native American art
history, museum studies or other related field; or
• Comparable combination of education and/or relevant experience;
• Knowledge of Native American culture, particularly Plains Indians is highly preferred;
• Efficient knowledge of museum registration systems and collections management procedures;
• Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the interpretation and exhibition
of art and objects for diverse audiences.
• Strong written/oral communication skills.
• Ability to manage a schedule with within the means of the museum.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors,
professional colleagues and other members of the museum community.
• Strong organizational, planning, and research skills

Physical Demands

The ability to perform moderate physical activity such as climbing stepladders; lifting or moving up to 50
pounds; kneeling, standing, or walking for extended periods.

Expectations of Hours Worked

40-hour minimum work week.

Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially when deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.
Must be able to work flexible hours.
