The Department of Corrections is focused on public safety through the custody and supervision of those in our care. The DOC is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in criminal justice and public safety to join our team. This posting will be used to fill current and future vacancies that may occur over the next six months at correctional facilities throughout the state of Wisconsin. 

Correctional Officers are responsible for ensuring the security, custody, control, and treatment of persons in our care in DOC facilities. Correctional Officers have the ability to make a positive difference in the lives of others and are an integral part of the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining order: Enforcing rules and keeping order in jails and prisons 
  • Supervising inmates: Overseeing inmate activities, work assignments, and behavior 
  • Conducting searches: Looking for contraband like weapons or drugs in cells, recreation rooms, and showers 
  • Inspecting facilities: Checking that facilities meet security and safety standards 
  • Escorting inmates: Transporting inmates to and from courtrooms, medical facilities, job sites, and other locations 
  • Reporting incidents: Writing reports about inmate conduct and other activities 
  • Responding to emergencies: Managing violent confrontations and other emergency situations 
  • Assisting with rehabilitation: Helping with educational, recreational, and religious activities for inmates 
  • Maintaining records: Keeping records of inmate activities 
  • Maintaining routines: Ensuring a consistent routine and demeanor

 

Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No felony convictions without a pardon
  • No domestic violence convictions
  • Willing to work overtime
  • Meet firearm standards
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict
